Elon Musk’s New AI Company X.AI Takes Aim at OpenAI and the Future of AI Innovation

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has launched a new company dedicated to advancing the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The company, known as X.AI, was incorporated in Nevada last month and lists Musk as its director, with Jared Birchall, the director of Musk’s family office, as its secretary.
Rumors of Musk’s latest venture had been circulating for some time, with reports suggesting that he had purchased thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs) to power an upcoming generative AI product. The Financial Times also reported that Musk intended to create an AI firm to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, and had even sought funding from SpaceX and Tesla investors to get the company off the ground.
Musk has long been vocal about his opposition to OpenAI, the AI organization that he co-founded in 2015 but subsequently left in 2018. He recently signed a letter calling for a pause on “giant AI experiments” and has been critical of OpenAI’s approach to the field.
